# Digital Experience Platforms (DXP)

## Creating connected experiences: Your custom DXP

A **digital experience platform (DXP)** connects content, e-commerce and data into one consistent ecosystem, the digital control center for marketing and IT teams that manage more than a single website.

Our principle: **horizontal orchestration** instead of a monolith. Every system does what it does best, the [headless CMS](https://www.digit-one.com/en/web/headless-websites) handles content, [Shopify](https://www.digit-one.com/en/shopify) handles commerce, your ERP owns the master data and the platform connects them where your customers are. The result: digital experiences that radically simplify processes. Data flows together **automatically**, recurring tasks run themselves, and AI kicks in where it truly saves time, from product data sync to personalized delivery.

## More than just a website: your **digital control center**

Standard websites **hit their limits** when requirements get complex.

## When do you need a DXP and when don’t you?

A DXP pays off when one of these sentences sounds like your day-to-day:

- You run **multiple brands, countries or portals** and maintain content several times.
- Your customers expect a **personal login area** with their own pricing and content.
- Store, CMS, CRM and ERP work **side by side instead of together**.
- Your content team spends more time **copying than creating**.
- You want to personalize, but your **data sits scattered** in silos.

And when not? If a single website with manageable content is your goal, a well-built CMS is enough and we’ll tell you that **honestly in the first call**.

## The **building blocks** of a DXP

A DXP isn't a standard product, it's assembled from **individual components**. Which ones make sense depends on your use case:

## Composable architecture

1

The best tool for every job: we orchestrate **best-of-breed systems** through clean interfaces, following MACH principles. Swap individual components later without rebuilding the platform.

### Personalized portals

2

Protected login areas for **B2B customers**, dealers or members, with individual content, pricing and features per user group. From one platform, without isolated tools.

### Multi-site management

3

Dozens of country and brand sites from **one central setup**: shared data base, unified editing, new sites in hours instead of weeks, like b_smart with 20+ hotels.

### Automation & AI

4

User data flows straight into campaigns and processes: **marketing automation**, automatic product data sync, AI-assisted content management. The recurring stuff runs itself, your team gains time for what matters.

## Composable DXP instead of a monolith: why we orchestrate horizontally

A DXP is not a product you buy, it’s an **architecture decision**. Suite vendors promise everything in one system and deliver its limits, too: license costs, release cycles and a lock-in that makes every strategic change expensive. We build composable instead: specialized systems, connected through a lean, event-driven integration layer.

That’s not just a technical principle, it’s an **investment strategy**: business logic lives where it belongs, in the ERP, the CRM, the PIM, instead of in expensive platform workarounds. In our project models this means significantly lower maintenance costs and drastically reduced switching costs when a component needs replacing. Every system stays exchangeable; no vendor holds you hostage.

What belongs to a DXP? Typical components are:

- **Headless CMS** for content across all channels
- **Commerce layer** (usually Shopify in our case) for checkout and transactions
- **CRM and marketing automation** for customer data and campaigns
- **PIM/ERP integration** for product and master data
- **Analytics** for data-driven decisions
- **An integration layer** connecting everything event-driven

The starting point is always a proper **discovery**: which systems exist, where does which logic live, what should the platform do a year from now? Then the architecture stands and with it a project that stays plannable instead of sprawling.

## How we get to your platform

**Discovery.** We analyze your system landscape, processes and goals and clarify where which logic should live.

**Architecture.** We define components, interfaces and data flows, documented and traceable before budget flows into implementation.

**Implementation.** Agile development with staging, code reviews and automated releases, live module by module.

**Operations.** Monitoring, evolution and a team that knows your platform. Not a project end, a partner.

## What is a digital experience platform (DXP)?

A DXP is the **overall architecture** behind your digital touchpoints: it connects content management, e-commerce, customer data and marketing tools into one platform that delivers consistent experiences across websites, portals and stores. Unlike a single website, a DXP governs how all systems work together, from the product database to the personalized campaign.

### How is a DXP different from a CMS?

A CMS manages content for a website and does that perfectly well at manageable scale. A **DXP orchestrates the bigger picture**: multiple channels, portals and brands, connected with commerce, customer data and automation. Rule of thumb: as soon as you maintain content, data or processes more than once, you’re outgrowing a plain CMS, time to look at platform architecture.

### Composable DXP or suite, which is more economical?

In the long run, usually the **composable architecture**. Suites feel convenient at first but tie you to license models, release cycles and one system that has to do everything and does much of it only moderately well. Composable means: best individual systems, clearly connected responsibilities, exchangeable components. That noticeably lowers maintenance costs and keeps switching costs down when your business changes. The honest answer for your case comes from a discovery, not a sales deck.

### Is Shopify part of a composable architecture?

Yes, as exactly what it does best: the **commerce layer**. In our DXP projects, Shopify handles checkout, cart and transactions while CMS, ERP and CRM play to their own strengths. The store is kept deliberately lean, no second ERP, no second PIM. See how we do it on our [Shopify page](https://www.digit-one.com/en/shopify).

### Which systems do you integrate into a DXP?

Headless CMS like **Sanity, Storyblok and Contentful**, Shopify as the commerce layer, marketing tools like HubSpot and Klaviyo and your existing systems: across 12 connector projects so far we have integrated **SAP, Microsoft Dynamics, Xentral and PlentyONE**. What matters is not the logo list but the clean interface: event-driven, monitored, documented.

### How do we start a DXP project?

With a **discovery**: we analyze your system landscape, clarify where which logic should live, and define the architecture before budget flows into implementation. After that you know what gets built, why and what it costs. You’ll find the framework in our [consulting](https://www.digit-one.com/en/services/consulting-and-advisory-services), and the entry point in a free first call.

### How much does a digital experience platform cost?

It depends on components and integration depth: a setup of headless CMS and Shopify with a clean integration layer is far leaner than a platform with portals, PIM and CDP. The composable approach has a cost advantage here: you start **with what matters now** and extend modularly. After the discovery you get a solid architecture and cost plan, not a ballpark. The first call is free.
