With four different stores, diverse customer groups, and markets, our project was anything but standard. Digit-One understood our requirements and worked with us to develop pragmatic solutions. But what we especially appreciate is the open and straightforward nature of our collaboration. Over the course of our intensive collaboration on this project, a mutual trust has developed that has now taken on a friendly character, and that is exactly what makes this partnership so special to us.

### Working with Digit-One really gave us the best possible outcome.

We learned a lot ourselves and were particularly grateful for the support. We feel that we are in really good hands, and Digit-One has implemented our requests perfectly.
The interaction between Plytix and Shopify also worked smoothly. We are glad that we were able to resolve all questions and problems in a very short time together with Digit-One. It was only with this help that we were able to implement our project in such a short time frame.

All components of a migration must be handled cleanly and with quality assurance in order to eliminate the risk of revenue losses.

The most expensive replatforming mistake is lost visibility: that is why **SEO transition **is a fixed part of our plan, never an afterthought.

## The core areas of **smooth migration**

## Requirements & planning

1

Project success

Budget safety

We map requirements, data structures and interfaces systematically and plan the project phases so budget and timeline hold. Before we start, it is clear what gets migrated, replaced or deliberately left behind.

### Design & storefront UX

2

User experience is more than good design. We translate your brand into a storefront that loads fast, converts cleanly and can be maintained by your team in the theme editor.

### Technical implementation

3

Development in sprints, closely aligned with your IT: integrations, system connections and custom functionality are built alongside the storefront and tested continuously.

### Data migration

4

Products, categories, orders, customer accounts and credits move in a structured way: cleanly mapped to the Shopify data model and fully verified before go-live.

### SEO, SEA and Ads transition

5

Your rankings and campaigns should not feel the move: 301 redirects for every URL, meta data, structured data and tracking migrate with the shop in a controlled way.

### Go live

6

The new shop is built in parallel to your live business. After a full dress rehearsal we switch over as planned: zero downtime, outside your peak hours, with a smooth transition for operations and customers.

### Ongoing quality assurance and service

8

Multi-stage quality assurance across the whole project. After go-live, new features are tested in a staging environment first, and we keep supporting your shop in daily operations.

## How the switch works without your store **standing still**

Your old store keeps selling while the new one is being built: we work **in parallel to your live business** and run a **full dress rehearsal** before anything is switched. Checkout, payment methods, shipping, data flows: only when everything holds do we schedule the cutover, outside your peak hours.

The move also covers what Google and your customers should never notice: every old URL gets its **301 redirect**, order data and customer accounts arrive complete, and your ERP and tools are reconnected from day one. That is exactly why we work closely with your IT and system partners.

## What does Shopify cover out of the box and where does experience show that custom solutions are needed?

Shopify covers the essential core functionality: storefront including CMS, checkout, payment processing, basic shipping management, and order management. Beyond that, a rich app ecosystem provides fast and straightforward solutions in many cases, without the need for custom development.

Custom solutions come into play when requirements go beyond the standard, for example with complex pricing logic, tailored checkout flows, advanced B2B functionality, specific ERP or CRM integrations, or a brand UX that themes alone cannot deliver.

### How maintenance-intensive is a typical, large Shopify store?

A large Shopify store is fundamentally low-maintenance compared to self-hosted solutions. Shopify itself handles infrastructure, security, and platform updates, meaning the effort required for pure maintenance work is significantly lower than with comparable self-hosted systems.

The actual effort arises primarily from custom modifications and apps, as well as ongoing optimizations around performance, conversion, and evolving business requirements. The majority of the budget therefore flows into feature development and enhancements that are directly tied to measurable ROI.

For larger stores, continuous support is recommended to ensure stability, quality, and ongoing development.

### Which data can be migrated?

In general, the core store data can be migrated: products, categories, customer data, order history, and content such as CMS pages and blog entries.

Things become more technically involved with specific configurations, historical metadata, or structures that are mapped differently in the target system. A thorough analysis upfront is essential here to avoid data loss and ensure the integrity of the migrated data.

What cannot be migrated automatically is design, custom functionality, integrations, tracking setups, and similar elements. These need to be reconceived and implemented as part of the project.

### What options are available for implementing B2B solutions with Shopify?

Shopify Plus offers native B2B functionality: custom price lists, customer-specific catalogs, payment terms, and more. For many common B2B requirements, this provides a solid foundation.

Beyond that, a wide range of B2B-typical functionality can also be implemented using native system features, such as volume discounts, customer group-based pricing, or restricted areas for registered trade customers. Combined with targeted custom extensions, even more complex B2B scenarios can be handled efficiently, without the need for a fully bespoke solution. Which B2B features are available without Plus is shown in [Shopify B2B without Plus](https://www.digit-one.com/en/shopify-b2b-without-plus).

### How flexibly can marketing automations be implemented or integrated in Shopify?

Shopify offers Shopify Flow as a native automation tool, covering basic workflows such as tagging, notifications, and simple trigger-based actions. For many standard marketing use cases, this is a solid starting point.

For more sophisticated automations, for example in CRM, email marketing, or along the customer journey, integrating specialized tools such as [Klaviyo](https://www.digit-one.com/en/shopify/klaviyo), HubSpot, or comparable platforms is recommended. Shopify connects flexibly with these systems via native integrations and APIs, allowing data such as orders, customer segments, or behavioral events to be passed seamlessly and used in campaigns.

Overall flexibility is high, but the key lies in a clean tracking and data setup as the foundation for all downstream automations.

### Black box ERP integration: how much effort should be expected?

The effort depends largely on whether a standard connector is available. Since Shopify is one of the most widely used e-commerce platforms in the world, ready-made connectors already exist for many common ERP systems such as Business Central, Odoo, or SAP, and these typically only need to be configured. This keeps the effort manageable.

If no standard connector is available, a custom integration needs to be set up. Here, close collaboration between ERP experts and Shopify experts is recommended. In an upfront concept phase, the relevant integration points and cross-system processes are defined first, before the integration is planned and implemented. This approach minimizes risk and creates a solid foundation for ongoing operations.

We are familiar with both scenarios from practical experience and support projects across the full spectrum of these integration requirements.

### What does a migration to Shopify cost?

It depends on your starting point, there is no more honest answer. The main cost drivers: the size of your catalogue and data, the quality of that data, and whether standard functionality is enough or custom features, an ERP integration or deep process integration come on top. A manageable store with clean data, data transfer, redirects and a tested go-live is far leaner than Shopify Plus with multiple markets and a headless setup. We do not work with fixed packages but calculate individually: after an initial call and a look at your setup, you get a reliable estimate.

### How long does the migration take, and will the store be offline?

Your store stays online throughout. The new shop is built in parallel to your live business and tested thoroughly, only then do we switch over, planned and outside your peak hours. Project duration depends on scope and ranges from a few weeks to a few months. A real-world example: we migrated Meinarztbedarf.com from WooCommerce to Shopify in two months.

### Will we lose SEO rankings during the migration?

No, not if the migration is done properly. Every old URL gets a 301 redirect to its new destination, meta data and structured data move with the shop, and the change is communicated cleanly to Google. Short-term fluctuations are normal, a lasting drop is not. That is exactly why SEO transition is a fixed part of every migration we run, never an optional extra.

### Shopware or Shopify: which one fits us?

Both systems are mature, the honest answer depends on your business model. Shopify shines when operating effort, time to market and international scaling matter: SaaS operations without your own server infrastructure, predictable costs and fast rollouts of new markets. Shopware remains a good choice when highly individual process logic needs to live deep inside the shop system itself. We come from a systems-integration background and give open-ended advice: sometimes our recommendation is to stay on your current system.
